EDITOR'S CORNER: Modern Warfare in the Age of Technology

Image
We know that drones play a huge role in the war in Ukraine, on both sides. Some even say this conflict—and the tools being used—have completely changed the way wars are fought. In some ways, that’s a good thing: drones allow munitions to be deployed without putting soldiers directly in harm’s way. But it also means warfare has become even more deadly. And what about autonomous robots and drones? Should machines really be allowed to decide whether someone lives or dies? In this blog post, I want to take a closer look at the ethical side of using drones and robots on the battlefield.  WHAT TYPE OF TECHNOLOGY CAN WE FIND IN WAR?   Modern warfare is no longer defined solely by soldiers on the ground or tanks rolling across battlefields. Today, technology sits at the heart of nearly every military strategy. Drones are one of the most visible examples—deployed for surveillance, precision strikes, and even resupplying troops. Yet they represent only a fraction of the technological ar...

EDITOR'S CORNER: Why Do You Support Gaza?

Image
Today, I want to share a perspective that may be unpopular, but I believe it’s worth voicing. I live in Finland, in northern Europe—a country with an active movement for Gaza and, at the same time, a long border with Russia. How are these two realities connected? What I find striking is this: why are so many young people—mostly liberals—mobilizing so passionately for Gaza, while the war in Ukraine has all but disappeared from public discussion? Gaza is tragic, yes, but it does not threaten us directly. Ukraine, by contrast, is right on our doorstep. So why does one inspire constant protests and the other barely registers anymore?     COMPARING THE TWO CONFLICTS  Firstly, let’s look at how the two wars are unfolding. The war in Ukraine began in 2022, when Russia launched a full-scale invasion after years of mounting tension and earlier conflict in Crimea and Donbas. What initially shocked Europe—and drew overwhelming global support—has since ground into a slow, exhausting ...

EDITOR'S CORNER: Can Europe Keep Ukraine at the Centre of West's Agenda?

Image
The White House summit on Monday gathered U.S. and European leaders to reaffirm support for Ukraine and coordinate transatlantic strategy. Ukraine remains the key test of unity, as Washington and Europe work to align on military aid, economic backing, and diplomacy amid rising political pressures and diverging priorities. More than a photo-op, the summit was a measure of whether the West can hold together under strain—from Russia’s aggression to internal divisions—especially in the shadow of Trump’s disastrous meeting with Putin in Alaska. In this blog post, let’s unpack the drama behind the stagecraft and what it means for the future of Western unity.     EUROPE CRASHES TRUMP’S SHOW When Zelenskyy arrived in Washington, he didn’t come alone. Behind him came a delegation of Europe's most influential leaders: Britain’s Keir Starmer, France’s Emmanuel Macron, Germany’s Olaf Scholz, Italy’s Giorgia Meloni, Finland’s Alexander Stubb, plus EU Commission President Ursula von de...

EDITOR'S CORNER: Russia's Tsar Legitimized By Trump

Image
On Friday, 15 August, we had the Alaska summit. The internet is overflowing with analysis and commentary from experts on what went down. Trump and Putin—or is it Putin leading Trump on a leash? As expected, no concrete decisions came out of the meeting, but a key message was delivered. In this blog post, I’ll share my perspective on why this moment was significant—not just for Putin, but also as a turning point in Trump’s story. Trump and Putin greeted each other on the tarmac     THE SUMMIT ANNOUNCED First, let’s get into the backstory. Trump is desperate to win a Nobel Peace Prize—for his delusional "efforts" to stop wars. In his mind, he’s already ended countless conflicts during his brief time in the White House: Iran and Israel, Azerbaijan and Armenia, Rwanda and Congo, Cambodia and Thailand, Serbia and Kosovo, even India and Pakistan over Kashmir. By his own tally, he’s basically stopped a war a month. But his biggest ambition is to "end" the war in Ukraine. ...

EDITOR'S CORNER: A Russia-USA Summit Without Ukraine?

Image
Last week brought a startling announcement: Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump will meet in Alaska on August 15th to discuss “peace” in Ukraine. Notably absent from the table will be Volodymyr Zelenskyy or any European leaders. It will be just Putin and Trump—alone—attempting to “resolve” a war in which only one of them is a direct party. Reports have already surfaced of what the Kremlin expects in exchange for a ceasefire. As usual, the demands are outrageous. And yet, it appears Trump is once again playing directly into Putin’s hands. In this blog post, I want to examine the details of this proposed deal—and how Ukraine views it. Let me be clear: I find it appalling that Trump believes he has the authority to negotiate on Ukraine’s behalf without Ukraine’s consent. He does not have the right to hand over Ukrainian territory, in defiance of both the Ukrainian constitution and the will of the Ukrainian people.   PURPORTED RUSSIAN CEASEFIRE DEMANDS Putin has once again reiterated his p...

EDITOR'S CORNER: Should Palestine Be Recognized?

Image
The question of recognizing Palestine as a state has been debated for decades. Despite extensive discussion, many Western countries have yet to take formal steps toward official recognition. While approximately 146 countries already recognize Palestine as a state, it still lacks universal official status. In this blog post, I will explore why the issue of Palestinian statehood has resurfaced so prominently in recent weeks. We’ll also examine the arguments for and against formal recognition by major players such as Canada, the UK, France, and Germany — as well as why the United States remains opposed. WHAT IS PALESTINE? Palestine is often understood as a geographic region in the Middle East, but its political definition is more complex. Today, the term typically refers to the Palestinian territories—the West Bank and Gaza Strip—areas that have long been central to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. These regions are home to millions of Palestinians who share a distinct national identity,...

EDITOR'S CORNER: How to Stop Russia?

Image
Peace in Ukraine doesn’t begin with Putin. What does that mean? It means peace can’t be negotiated with the current regime. The moment the war ends, Putin and his circle face the risk of collapse.  In this blog post, we’ll explore the conditions under which Russia might actually come to the negotiating table and participate in good faith. THE CURRENT STATE OF THE WAR IN UKRAINE 2025 has been a bad year for the Russians. Rising casualties with little gain, an increasing cost of war, and few meaningful victories have Putin chomping at the bit. He knows the population is becoming increasingly intolerant of the war. We can't see this, of course. Public dissent is banned—a sentence that can earn you a one-way ticket to the front. Still, the signs are there. Leaks from within the military, subtle shifts in propaganda, and growing signs of unrest in the regions all point to a regime under pressure. The war that was supposed to be quick and decisive has become a grinding, costly stalemate....
