EDITOR'S CORNER: How Ukraine Became a Global Player

Image
The Ukraine war is no longer just a conflict between Ukraine and Russia. It has expanded far beyond Europe, reaching into the Middle East and even Africa. But how did this happen? The growing conflict involving Iran has pushed modern drone warfare directly onto NATO’s doorstep and into the strategic calculations of its allies. At the same time, global energy markets have become increasingly interconnected as instability around the Strait of Hormuz threatens one of the world’s most important oil shipping routes. As a result, many countries are being forced to rely more heavily on energy supplies from the United States, China, and other regions outside the Middle East. This has also transformed Ukraine’s strategy of targeting Russian oil refineries into something much larger than a regional military tactic. What began as an effort to weaken Russia’s war economy has evolved into a form of kinetic economic warfare with global consequences — affecting fuel prices, supply chains, and energy ...

RUSSIA: The Way Russian Soldiers are Treated

Image
The full-scale war in Ukraine began on February 24, 2022, and has since stretched on for more than three years. It has been brutal — and, tragically, only more intense over time. In Ukraine, defenders are widely respected as heroes: men and women who sacrifice their lives and time with family to protect their country’s freedom and safety. No armed force is without flaws, but by and large Ukrainian fighters are supported by their units and by a society that does everything possible to care for the wounded and honour the fallen. Russia’s treatment of its troops, by contrast, has often been harsh and inhumane. Reports of beatings, torture and summary executions paint a picture far removed from the respect and support shown to Ukrainian defenders. My aim in this post is not to ask for pity for individual Russian soldiers, but to issue a blunt warning to any Russian man considering service in this war: the pay the Kremlin offers does not justify what you will face. For the sake of your life...

UKRAINE: Flamingo Missiles

Image
Last week, we examined whether Ukraine might receive Tomahawk missiles from the United States. While Friday’s meeting didn’t deliver the outcome Kyiv had hoped for, the White House made it clear that the door isn’t fully closed—at least not yet. Maybe never, but Trump hasn't said it so far.  Still, Ukraine may have an ace up its sleeve: the Flamingo missile. In this post, we’ll take a closer look at what these weapons are and whether they could change Ukraine’s fortunes—no matter what Trump decides on any given day. Or, whether he is influenced by Trump.  WHAT ARE THE FLAMINGO MISSILE? The Flamingo is a Ukrainian-developed long-range cruise missile created for precision strikes against strategic and tactical targets. Ukrainian sources report that it can reach distances of up to 3,000 kilometers, with a payload of 1,150 kilograms. It is understood to be a ground-launched system, giving Ukraine the ability to strike far beyond the front lines. The missile’s aerodynamic design is...

EDITOR'S CORNER: How Do We Stop the War in Ukraine?

Image
This week, Ukraine and Russia are expected to hold another round of peace talks, once again taking place in Istanbul. However, it seems that Russia is dragging its feet, hesitating over the time and date. These talks are being held at President Zelenskyy's request. For the past three and a half years, we've been asking ourselves how to bring this war to an end. Russia’s demands—previously outlined—remain appalling. Neither Ukraine nor the West can accept such excessive terms. Doing so would send a dangerous signal: that wars of aggression and land grabs are rewarded, and that only time and brute force matter. In this blog post, I want to explore what it might take to bring Putin to the negotiating table—without capitulating to the Kremlin’s outrageous positions.     ENDLESS TALKS   Since the war began, Russia and Ukraine have met at various tables, attempting to negotiate a peace agreement—or at least a ceasefire. Some progress has been made, such as establishing humanita...

EDITOR'S CORNER: Refugees Back to Ukraine?

Image
I was shocked to read that Britain now considers parts of western Ukraine safe and is encouraging refugees to return and repatriate internally. How can Western allies extend military support with one hand, yet reject Ukrainians based on refugee visa applications with the other? In this blog post, we’ll dive into that contradiction. Ukrainian refugees have been welcomed around the world with open arms. But after three and a half years, is that welcome starting to wear thin?     UKRAINIANS AS REFUGEES Around 7 million Ukrainians have fled their homeland since the war began. The vast majority are women and children. While some men have also left, many have remained in Ukraine to support the war effort in various ways. These families have largely integrated into their host countries. They've found jobs, secured housing, enrolled their children in schools, and learned the local language—or improved their English. Many have built new friendships and formed communities. Since the beg...

RUSSIA: Demotivated and Abused – Soldiers on the Front Line

Image
A few weeks ago, we examined the brutal conditions faced by Russia's Z penal battalions . These criminals, promised freedom after six months of combat in Ukraine, are often met with a far harsher reality. Instead of release, they’re kept in service long past the promised term, forced into relentless "meat wave" assaults until they’re either unfit for duty or dead. Yes, these are convicts—rapists, thieves, and murderers. But what about the regular troops, the so-called "brave" men fighting for Mother Russia and the vision of "russkiy mir"? This week, we turn our attention to the treatment of Russia's regular soldiers. We'll examine their length of service, the conditions they endure, and the realities of their situation on the front lines.        HOW LONG ARE THEY ON THE BATTLEFIELD? Let’s start with the simplest part of this topic. These contract soldiers initially sign up with the Russian military for a limited term, usually six months to a ye...

UNDERSTANDING HAMAS: Origins, Objectives, and the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict

Image
In the complex and tumultuous landscape of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, one organization stands prominently at the forefront: Hamas, formally known as the Islamic Resistance Movement. This group exerts a considerable influence in the Palestinian territories, particularly in the Gaza Strip. To gain a comprehensive understanding of this enduring conflict, it is imperative to delve into Hamas's identity, organizational structure, motivations for its actions against Israel, and the methods it employs.  This blog post aims to illuminate these aspects while also providing insights into Israel's perspective and how the current conflict will develop in the near future. WHO IS HAMAS? Hamas, or Harakat al-Muqawamah al-Islamiyyah in Arabic, emerged amid the turmoil of the First Intifada, a Palestinian uprising against Israeli occupation, in 1987. Deeply rooted in Palestinian soil, Hamas has evolved into a multifaceted entity that combines both political and militant dimensions. Unli...

UKRAINE: Debunking War Myths

Image
In this week's post, let's have a look at some of the arguments that have been thrown around since Russia invaded Ukraine, on February 25th, 2022. Much banter has been thrown about the reason as to why Russia invaded, to why the West should stop funding weapons and providing money to Ukraine.  Let's debunk some of the most popular ones!  WHY DOESN'T UKRAINE JUST NEGOTIATE? IT WILL SAVE LIVES! Negotiating with Russia is a complex endeavor, underscored by their actions dating back to 2014, when they illegally occupied Crimea and participated in the Donbas War, and sought peace through the Minsk Agreements. Achieving a successful negotiation amid the ongoing conflict necessitates Russia's complete military withdrawal and the return of all Ukrainian territories, notably Crimea. Failing to meet these conditions raises several critical concerns: Humanitarian Concerns: Surrendering land without a full Russian withdrawal risks abandoning Ukrainian citizens in temporarily o...

AI ON THE BATTLEFIELD: The Revolution of Warfare

Image
Artificial intelligence (AI) has become a game-changer in various fields, and modern warfare is no exception. With its ability to process vast amounts of data and make decisions at lightning speed, AI is reshaping the battlefield in unprecedented ways. In this blog post, we will explore five key areas where AI is transforming warfare and delve into the ethical implications that come with its integration. 1. AUTONOMOUS DRONES AND ROBOTICS The impact of AI on the battlefield has become prominently evident through the emergence of autonomous drones and robots. These AI-powered machines have proven to be invaluable assets for military forces worldwide, boasting advanced sensors and cameras that offer real-time surveillance and reconnaissance capabilities, providing crucial intelligence on enemy positions and movements. Beyond their surveillance capabilities, these autonomous drones are also adept at executing precision strikes, thereby minimizing collateral damage and significantly reduci...
