CHINA: The Hidden Struggle of the Uyghur People

Image
China is known for many things, including its rapid modernization, advanced technology sector, and its role as a global manufacturing and export powerhouse. In fact, much of the consumer goods we use every day are labelled “Made in China.” Politically, China is a one-party state led by the Chinese Communist Party, with Xi Jinping serving as its top leader since 2012. His leadership has been marked by a strong centralization of authority. At the same time, China has faced significant international scrutiny over human rights concerns, including widely reported allegations of abuses affecting its Uyghur Muslim population in the Xinjiang region. This week, I want to focus on the situation faced by these communities, whose daily lives are heavily shaped by government policies and restrictions that have drawn concern from human rights organizations around the world.   WHO ARE THE UYGHUR MUSLIMS? Certainly. For a blog post, it often works best to introduce the Uyghurs before discussing th...

EDITOR'S CORNER: Are China Controlling the Rare Earth Market?

Image
Rare earths are extremely important to our modern world. You can find them in batteries, navigation systems, and other critical components used in defense equipment — such as jets, bombs, and missiles, for example. China controls a large portion of this market, both in mining rare earths and especially in refining them. What is happening now, and why is China restricting access to these materials? In this blog post, let's take a look at what rare earths are, why China holds a monopoly over them, and why it is now restricting access to these resources. WHAT ARE RARE EARTHS? Rare earths, also known as rare earth elements, are a group of 17 metallic elements essential to many modern technologies. Despite their name, most of these elements are quite common — they are relatively abundant in the Earth’s crust but are seldom found in concentrated deposits that are easy to mine. These elements include well-known names such as neodymium, dysprosium, and cerium, which are vital for producing...

EDITOR'S CORNER: Withdrawal of USA from Europe?

Image
Since Trump came into power, there has been talk that the USA might withdraw troops and armaments from Europe, with its focus shifting toward the Pacific. This topic feels especially relevant this week, after China’s Victory Parade on September 3, 2025, celebrating the 80th anniversary of the Second Sino-Japanese War and World War II. What we saw was an impressive display of Chinese weaponry—some new, some already known—all of it worrying. In this post, I want to cover what it could mean if the USA withdraws or reduces its support in Europe. And, for a change, let’s take a look at how much of a threat China poses on the global stage. We tend to focus on Russia, but I think China is the real sleeping dragon—one that could wake up and breathe fire . WHY DOES THE WHITE HOUSE WANT TO MAKE A CHANGE NOW? NATO has hosted U.S. troops in Europe since the end of the Second World War. Over the decades, Europe has built a defensive strategy—primarily aimed at Russia—that has relied heavily on Amer...

CHINA: Is Taiwan Safe?

Image
In today’s increasingly tense global landscape, the relationship between powerful nations and smaller, self-governing regions is drawing more attention than ever. One of the clearest examples is the growing strain between China and Taiwan. These tensions have been building for years, with Taiwan regularly facing pressure from Beijing—everything from diplomatic isolation to near-constant military drills by the People’s Liberation Army in the Taiwan Strait. It’s no wonder the region feels on edge. In this post, I’m taking a fresh look at Taiwan and the mounting pressure it’s under from China. Despite its small size, Taiwan plays a massive role in the global tech scene—especially when it comes to producing microchips and other critical components that power our digital world. If the West loses sight of just how important that is, the consequences could be steep. China isn’t just flexing its military strength—it’s rapidly expanding its influence economically and socially, too.    ...

EDITOR'S CORNER: Can Europe Trust China?

Image
In an era of Trump economics and threats of tariffs looming in the near future, Europe faces a pressing question: can it trust China and build a closer economical relationship? As the world’s second-largest economy, China plays a crucial role in global trade, technology, and diplomacy. Yet, its authoritarian governance, human rights concerns, and aggressive geopolitical strategies make its reliability uncertain. While economic ties between Europe and China have deepened over the years, tensions remain over security, human rights, and supply chain dependencies.  This blog post examines whether Europe can afford to trust China, weighing economic pragmatism against strategic caution. EUROPE'S RELATIONSHIP WITH CHINA    Europe’s relationship with China is both intricate and dynamic, shaped by deep economic ties and persistent political tensions. China is the EU’s second-largest source of imports and a crucial trading partner, particularly in technology, green energy, and manu...

EDITOR'S CORNER: The Changing World Order

Image
The term “world order” refers to the overall framework of global power, governance, and international relations. As the global landscape evolves, the world order adjusts to changes in economic, political, and technological spheres. Some people talk about a “new world order” in the context of conspiracy theories, suggesting a secretive group is manipulating global events to create a totalitarian global government. However, this is not what we are addressing here; instead, we are focusing on the real and evolving dynamics of global affairs. This post examines the changing global structures. It explores the reasons behind these transformations and their implications. It also looks at the emerging trends reshaping global dynamics. I believe the world is moving from a unipolar framework dominated by the United States to a more complex multipolar system. This shift is marked by the rise of new global powers and changing alliances. THE ROOTS OF THE CONCEPT To fully grasp the changing world or...

CHINA: WHAT IS HAPPENING IN TAIWAN?

Image
We had an international furore when United States House of Representatives Speaker, Nancy Pelosi, arrived on a state visit to the island of Taiwan on 3rd August 2022. Her visit caused Beijing to react extremely angry. The visit, according to Pelosi was to ''show that America has unwavering commitment to Taiwan.'' However, China condemned this visit as a threat to their "One-China" policy. This was the highest level state visit of a United States representative in 25 years, so we can see why this caused some friction between the two nations.  IS TAIWAN PART OF CHINA? Before we move further, lets look at the history of Taiwan. This small island off the coast of the Fujian province of China, came under Chinese control in the 17th century, under the Qing dynasty. They annexed the island in 1693, but had to cede it to the Empire of Japan in 1895, when they lost the first Sino-Japanese war. After the Second World War, the Republic of China, that overthrew the Qing d...
